No weapons because schools are not tolerant of weapons. No blood and guts because someone might get sick. Use the whole page because an artist doesn’t just put the picture in the middle and leave the outside black. No names of people should be used. Color is essential because we see in color and it makes our pictures stand out. Do not wrinkle and wad up your picture because it is being put in a book. No negative comments about pictures and that includes your own. Be proud enough of your picture to sign it in the lower right hand corner. Learning how to draw a car on paper can be difficult, so it is important to get expert advice for the correct technique!

Banksy Posters - A Good Alternative To The Real Thing?

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 in Arts

Being accessable by a larger amount of people, Banksy posters are one of the only ways most of us will ever actually be the owner of a ‘Banksy’. the paintings and graffiti, they reflect the transient nature of posters and fly poster’s interim world. You still can’t do better than the graffiti art in the streets to reveal the best of Banksy’s work in graffiti.

The graffiti that you see on the streets doesn’t take long to surface as a Banksy stencil, poster, print or spray painted images. Banksy always manages to get the blend of humour, politics and amazing graphics just right. It is this combination which has made his handiwork stand out and become just about instantly recogniseable.

His inspiration has hit thousands of art afficionados by way of his very distinctive signature technique of mixing stencil art and graffiti. The majority of Banksy posters are actually mass produced which keeps the price down and attracts a broader crowd, nevertheless there are still many signed posters that are much sought after and can demand extremely high prices. Along with these, the original posters can be a terrific investment. Look out for the limited editions.

All of the Banksy art that is produced on the street is not everlasting. Street art and graffiti is easily defaced and the walls they are on can simply be demolished or painted over from time to time. Relocating work can be a tough task. This is why for many, posters are great as they are manageable and can be stored and moved easily. I appreciate…. its not quite the same as an original Banksy on a brick wall or canvas but for a lot of us for now this will just have to do!

Banksy Art - Genious or Vandal?

Posted on September 10th, 2009 in Arts

Banksy is probably the most famous yet the most mysterious graffiti artist this world has seen. Some consider him a prankster whereas others, an artistic genius. One thing that everyone agrees on is that his popularity cannot be denied. His work includes images and slogans which are usually satirical in nature. His subjects include both animals and human beings and theme of his work varies from politics, to ethics, to culture. His work has been sold for more than half a million apiece and some of his fans include Hollywood celebrities.

He is considered by many as the world’s foremost art terrorist. Recently this notorious graffiti artist had set his artistic sights on New Orleans, Louisiana, US. It was on the 28th of august, 2008, a day to the third anniversary of hurricane Katrina. The hurricane Katrina which struck this major city in 2005 caused a lot of damage and devastation. On its third anniversary, the city was painted by Banksy. The theme of his work was politics. He has fashioned a number of murals all around the city.

These murals show a mixture of scenes. Most of the pictures relate directly to the hurricane Katrina and its disastrous after effects. One of it showed former President Abraham Lincoln portraying him as a homeless man pushing a basket. Another picture showed an old man sitting on a rocking chair, with an American flag below the words “No Loitering”. Another image showed a little boy writing “I will not copy things I see on the Simpsons” on the board as imposition. In another one, a little girl was holding an umbrella and putting out her hand as if to feel the rains.

Another was that of a marching band wearing gas masks. Yet another picture showed a little boy like he was flying a kite except that the thread was attached to a refrigerator. In one way it looked like he was pulling at a refrigerator in air and in another way, like he was flying it. There was also this picture of a boy on a swing made of a life preserver.
Some people say that his work in New Orleans was a reply to Fred Radtke, the infamous anti graffiti crusader. He was a government clean up guy. Also called the ‘grey ghost’ he is known to indiscriminately cover up any graffiti in New Orleans wit hideous grey paint, regardless of the color of the underlying wall!

Some others say that the Banksy art is paying homage to their city and to share their grief and love for struggle. They say that he had highlighted their frustration with the political leaders at the slow pace of recovery. People also feel that he seemed very well informed about the local conditions in New Orleans. This shows that he might have been spending time with some of the local artists and bloggers of the city. Though the reaction of the people is mixed as always most of them feel that what he did was to bring out corruption to light.

Compact Digital Cameras - Should You Use Optical or Digital Zoom ?

Posted on August 13th, 2009 in Arts

The best compact digital cameras are generally equipped with both optical and digital zoom so in what way do they work and which one should you be using? Let us consider both these alternatives and find out which is the best one for the different types of photos you wish to take.

The optical zoom in a compact digital camera is very similar in action to the zoom on a typical 35mm film camera. the lens’s focal length is changed so that the subject appears much closer. The quality of the picture is preserved. On the other hand if you use a digital zoom the quality of the image is lowered since the image is cropped and blown up in a similar way to computer software for editing images. The quality of the image is seriously affected, more so for larger images.

When using digital zoom the photograph becomes out of focus and there is a loss of detail. Clearly optical zoom is far better and is the preferred option. Digital zoom can usually be turned off in nearly all cameras and it’s preferable to do this to stop it automatically being used if you zoom close in to an object. In order to take the best picture try to get nearer to the object. A further tip is to set the camera to use the highest possible file size so that the images can be edited later without losing any of the detail.

While you are using the images online, or emailing them digital zoom can be acceptable nevertheless for printing you should always use optical zoom. Buy a compact digital camera that has the highest possible optical zoom that you can afford and turn off the digital zoom. Nearly all Canon compact cameras for instance come with both optical and digital zoom, frequently with optical image stabilising systems for improved closeups.

If you know how to read guitar tabs and play a guitar, it has been proven that you are a better student at Math. Figuring out the tablature on the lines is automatic counting and interpretive thinking is done quickly and accurately. There have been many studies that have proven musical students go into much higher math levels in comparison to other students with no musical background. Playing the guitar at any age can help with mental retention and skills needed. Many schools can no longer afford to provide the students with music classes. I feel these music classes should be kept in the curriculum.

Clear glass dinnerware remains a collectible niche to this

Posted on May 23rd, 2008 in Arts, General, Home

Clear glass dinnerware remains a collectible niche to this day. The most popular of the iridescent glass patterns for collectors is the Fenton carnival glass that reached the height of popularity in the 1900’s. Collectors also remain interested in Northwood Glass pieces. Northwood began introducing their iridescent glass in 1908 and became a major competitor in the market.

The Fenton carnival glass was introduced in a trade magazine in October 1907 with production beginning shortly thereafter. Over 2,000 different patterns have been made. About 1,000 patterns are best known, with the other 1,000 patterns being more rare. Kitten and rabbit patterns were popular with children.

The iridescent glass appeared to have a metallic luster and sheen and was very unique in appearance. Items such as bowls, mugs, vases, plates, and entire table settings are produced using this glass. Popular colors in which the pieces were made were marigold, cobalt, and amethyst and these were the best sellers.

Fenton carnival glasses are created by the pressure of liquid glass in hot metal molds. It will take the form of the molds as it gets colder, and being hot the glass is sprayed with a unique mix of metallic salt in liquid. This action will produce the iridescent sheen. To avoid cracks, it is cooled quite slowly and glass takes up to 24 hours to gain room temperatures.

Originally, dime stores across America sold the pieces. After sometime the sales decreased and popularity waned and it was sold in bulk to carnivals. These were given as prizes on the midway. The name “carnival” glass was given because of this. The rainbow colors was apt for a carnival setting.

Fenton carnival glass, like other clear glass dinnerware, is collected by many people around the country. It’s not rare to see items at yard sales, estate sales, antique shops, and for sale at online auctions such as eBay. Because of the popularity, there are also many live auctions for carnival glass only. Search online for such auctions near you.

If you treat your glassware with care, it will serve you for many years to come. It’s fragile, so protect it from being jostled, as that can cause damage to the surface shine. Store it away from sunlight to preserve the rich color. Do not put it in the dishwasher; rather, wash the pieces by hand with a soft cloth and dish soap.

Clear glass dinnerware has been a popular collectible for over one hundred years. Two of the most popular patterns for collectors are the Fenton carnival glass and the Northwood glass. As the years have passed by, Fenton glass has evolved from being originally sold in dime stores to being sold in present day online auctions like eBay, but you can still find the pieces at antique auctions as well. Glassware, like any other fragile antique, must be specially cared for. Glassware may not be placed in a dishwasher or stored in direct sunlight and it should always be handwashed with a soft piece of clothing and dish soap.

Remo & Me

Posted on May 11th, 2008 in Arts, Entertainment, General, Retail

I have often been asked about my favorite musical instrument. I spent seventeen years travelling around Africa shooting big game in the 1960’s and 70’s but I also used the time to research tribal practices. And it is this latter obsession of mine that has led people to ask me the question about my musical proclivities. And every time I am asked this I can say with an open, honest heart that the remo djembe is the best drum and the best musical instrument in the world. If you have never watched the tribes people beat this drum repeatedly with their fists, over and over again you have missed a great drumming treat. Shooting animals is fun but not nearly as much fun as this. And that is why I became a vegetarian and concentrated on expanding my musical knowledge. I hope this has helped you to expand yours.

If this movie sounds high-faluting and hard to imagine — well, thats true to the film. But its also a lot of chaotic fun. I’m Not There dvd is an uncompromising, beautifully wrought essay on identity, artistic and otherwise. Im Not There takes its audience across a Rubicon of moviegoing disillusionment, apathy and sloth: If you are, as you say, so tired of the old, then here is the new. Embrace it, or please shut up. This is a film in which the name Bob Dylan is never uttered once and yet it still comes closer to getting to the bottom of the man, his music and his myths than anything that I can recall reading or seeing. A vividly imagined homage to the evolving music and enigmatic figure we know as Bob Dylan. A kaleidoscopic, non-linear meditation with little coherence, its bizarre, discordant and surreal - recommended only for Dylan devotees, definitely not a mainstream movie.
