Medicare AARP Options to Consider

Posted on January 31st, 2008 in Education, Health

An AARP Medicare supplement program functions like most of the other supplement plans out there. However, members can find the AARP Medicare Supplement with drug coverage a bit of a mystery.
Below are some of the options that AARP lists for their members:

First option

Members in the AARP Medicare Supplement insurance program are encouraged to apply for the Medicare Part D Prescription plan. Once this is done they can get rid of the old supplement coverage from the AARP and solely use the Medicare insurance drug coverage.

Second option

The second option involves a bit more caution. Instead of using option 1, Medicare members can enrol in Medicare Part D (2006) but keep their supplement insurance from AARP. Various adjustments have to be made to create a package that’s close to the original AARP Medicare supplement program. If you decide to choose option 2 make sure you check the costs against the prescription benefits before proceeding.

Third option

Option 3 proposes that you do not bother with the Medicare Part D prescription program, and instead stick with the AARP Medicare supplement plan. A downside to this is if you decide to join Medicare Part D at a later time, you may have to pay a penalty.

People who do not have either of the plans should apply for the Medicare Part D prescription program as soon as possible. Make sure you take advantage of the next enrolment window which comes around periodically. There is no change to the AARP Medicare supplement insurance coverage.

Check for the most recent information by visiting AARPHealthcare.com. Make sure you take into account your financial status and medical requirements before making a choice concerning how Medicare Part D or AARP Medicare supplement program may affect you.
