The vast majority of the public are completely unaware that periodontal disease and gum disease are both the same condition-just with different names. These harmful bacteria cause an infection in your gums that depletes the immune system while leaving you at a greater risk for serious medical problems such as stroke or heart attack. No matter which name you choose-be it gum disease or periodontal disease-the fact remains that it is a serious medical condition that can lead to serious health problems in the future.
