Defining Periodontal Disease And Gum Problems
The vast majority of the public are completely unaware that periodontal disease and gum disease are both the same condition-just with different names. The fact is that periodontal disease is a scientific name that actually refers to an entire class of medical problems relating to gingival tissue. Gum disease may be more of a basic or common way of talking about periodontal issues but they both refer to problems caused by anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity. These harmful bacteria cause an infection in your gums that depletes the immune system while leaving you at a greater risk for serious medical problems such as stroke or heart attack. No matter which name you choose-be it gum disease or periodontal disease-the fact remains that it is a serious medical condition that can lead to serious health problems in the future.
